My encounter with a stranger was a crossing guard, a middle aged man, on the way to my former high school. Then 18 and now I’m 32, yet I still remember our encounters. He remained the crossing guard for years on end. He spoke Spanish and would often give life lessons and advice. Advice one would give to their daughter or son. He had daughters and would often talk about them.
I took his advice to heart because he had good intentions. He often gave advice about family, friends, money, jobs, school. He was very supportive. “Echale ganas. Aqui en esta vida no hay amigos. Etc.” Translates to: “Give it your all. There are no friends in this life.” It was then I became aware of the friendships I had in the past. Envy is the enemy and it can appear in a form of a friend or family.
I admired receiving his wisdom. I still wonder how he is doing.
